Band: nevereven
The Mic: What got this band together and started in
this business?

Gary started another band which was a precursor to
this one, called Project Artisan back in 2001. It was
just an outlet for the songs he was writing at the
time. That band turned into nevereven when Kenny
joined in 2003. That line-up recorded the first
album, Kilter. Then, that line-up broke up and it
took a long time to secure our current line-up that
you can find on our newest self-titled album with
Scott and Frank. This band has died and been brought
back to life so many times. It's like Pet Sematary.
It could also be the reason we all hunger for human
blood.

The Mic:Who writes and produces all the material for
the band?

Our new album was produced by all of us collectively
and all of those songs were written by Gary. We had
some awesome help engineering, mixing and mastering
from Mike Watts and Rich Liegey at VuDu Studios, too.
Currently, everyone has been bringing in ideas and
we've been writing new material as a band for the
first time. It's a cool new dynamic.

The Mic:The band played in front of or with any acts
our readers would
know from the Mainstream?

The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles,
Queen, Guns N' Roses, Faith No More, Pink Floyd and
DLR-era Van Halen. You know, the usual.

The Mic:Where can people access your music on the web?

www.myspace.com/nevereven
www.sonicbids.com/nevereven
www.ourstage.com/profile/nevereven

Our music is also available for sale on CDBaby,
iTunes, Rhapsody and Napster.

The Mic:Any embarrassing moments on stage?

Our bass player once fancied himself the lead screamer
in the band on a tune that we longer play, due to a
tragic gardening accident. He was so excited the
first time we played Walk the Line live because it
opened with an almighty scream that should have
instilled fear into the hearts of several. As the
moment of truth approached, he went to give a mighty
bellow and the mic instantly started to feedback.
What came out was a confusing, dying
Chewbacca-the-Wookie gargle that didn't quite get the
message across. From that point on, Scott was no
longer lead screamer. Not long after that, we
realized that this was a band that was more suited to
singing...not a Cookie Monster screaming band.

Also, Frank's bunny hop. It embarrassed us all.

The Mic:Any good stories you want to tell us?

There's so many over the years. There was the time we
got a show at a Hell's Angels bar in upstate
Connecticut. They didn't want to hear our songs and
they made that very well known. They wanted Lynyrd
Skynyrd...and lots of it. We were lucky we made it
out alive.

The Mic:Who is the bands musical influence?

We all have various influences that cover a lot of
area. Kenny and Gary tend to listen to heavier
stuff...lots of metal and harder rock. Frank and
Scott tend to listen to more classic rock, but at the
end of the day, we all get influenced by everything,
from classical to jazz to electronica to swedish death
metal to gregorian chant. We all listen to
everything...except Kenny...he won't listen to Frank's
'80's rock. Don't even ask him to.

The Mic:How did the band get together?

Gary and Kenny met in college. Both were studying
music at The New School. Later on, Scott, who went to
the same school joined the group. We couldn't find a
guitarist for a long time, so we did what most bands
do in desperate situations...we put an ad on
craigslist. Frank was the first response and from the
minute he plugged in, we knew that this was the
line-up.
I know...it's weird, a craigslist success story. We
didn't think it was possible either.

The Mic:What is your musical background like?

Gary, Kenny and Scott met while studying jazz and The
New School. All three of them make their living
playing all different kinds of music in New York, so
everyone has extensive backgrounds in all different
styles and genres. Frank played in various cover and
rock bands in his native Brooklyn before finding us.
nevereven is a band that is a meeting ground for all
of that background to come together to make some
kick-ass rock.

The Mic:Any other members in your family that are
musicians?

Kenny's grandfather is a famous Latin singer. The
rest of us have the usual family backgrounds...but no
professional musicians.

The Mic:What is the TOP reason why you want to play
music?

We all have different reasons. I guess the universal
one for us is to express ourselves and connect to the
people listening to us. World domination is a close
second.

what's your stance on file swapping?

Always protect yourself.

what is the process of making a cd?

Spend a lot of money that you don't have and don't cut
any corners.

how do you get the word out about your music?

We tell everybody. And if they don't like it, we tell
them again...even louder.

how is your local responce to your music?

The NY scene sucks right now with all of these bands
who think they're playing music, when all they are is
a bunch of talentless whiney bitches who wear jeans
that are too tight and have daddy pay their rent for
them. We simply don't fit in to that hipster scene
where image is all you need. We're giving people an
alternative...the people who can see through all that
bullshit and really want substance and power in their
music tend to seek us out.

what is the farthest you have traveled for a gig?

284.6 miles. Thanks google maps.

What tune on the cd are you most proud of?

Everyone has their favorites and each of us have
different opinions on different songs, but in the long
run, we're proud of the entire album. I guess the
consensus says that Cloud Nine is the most accessible
"radio-friendly" song of ours, but Last Rites embodies
our sound the most.

Now let's break away from the tradtional band
questions you get asked all the time...Let's have some
fun...

1. Why do HOT chicks date ugly dudes?

Go ask some other ugly dudes.

2. Why are all guys in porn movies Douche bags?

We haven't heard this joke before. Why?

3. When Rappers do interviews on TV, why do they
always have a wall of Kung Fu movies behind them?

Ancient Chinese secret.

4. If a billionaire would come to your band and say
you could play with any band..living, dead, broke
up,etc.
*Who do you play with 3 bands one has to be your
band...
and
*Who opens and who closes?

If money could resurrect the dead, we'd have a whole
new set of problems on our hands. Two words: Zombie
Cobain
