The Mic: What got this band together and started in
this business?
The Funeral March: We were all mutual friends to begin with. Four of us grew up together going to the same schools and we met Shane, the vocalist, by playing with his old project called The Citys Therondy. After Shane joined we immediatley started writing new music, recording, and touring.
The Mic:Who writes and produces all the material for
the band?
The Funeral March:Well Robby Burbidge produces all the guitar parts for the band. He gets kind of a solid structure down and then we all jam on it working out any kinks or problems. Tim Steehler produces all of his original drum parts and Shane Sheffer composes all of his lyrics and vocal timings.
The Mic:The band played in front of or with any acts
our readers would
know from the Mainstream?
The Funeral March:Yes, when we tour we meet a lot of new bands and friends so we've had the opportunity to play with a lot of awesome bands. Some of them include: The Bled, Versus the Mirror, Kill Whitney Dead, SOMA, Arsonists Get All the Girls, Knights of the Abyss, You In Series and many more amazing bands.
The Mic:Where can people access your music on the web?
The Funeral March:You sure can! We have our new full length, "A Friend of Mayhem", up on itunes. We also sell our merch and albums on interpunk.com and ebandstore.com.
The Mic:Any embarrassing moments on stage?
The Funeral March:Haha, yeah we've all eaten the floor a couple times and shuved our elbows down each others throats because of our stage presence. One of the most memorable moments was in Memphis Tennessee and Robby was free ballin' it that night if you know what I mean and his pants ripped all around his crotch and back end. Ever since he has worn underwear on stage.
The Mic:Any good stories you want to tell us?
The Funeral March:Oh man there are so many I could tell you. A lesson we learned on one of our first tours is dont mess with people in the South West because they will KILL you. So here we are traveling through southern New Mexico and one of our trailer tires had just blown (keep in mind we are in the middle of no where). So we pull off on the side of the road where it looks like there is a driveway and we start trying to fix our flat. We notice that we arent going to be able to jack up our trailer with all of our equipment in it, so we unload all of our amps, drums, and merch and begin trying to get this obliterated tire off our trailer. Then all of a sudden this old drives up and starts getting really mad that we are blocking his drive way and asking us who we were. We said that we were in a band just passing by and needed to change our tire. The old man then said " Oh good well get the hell off my property! My wife called and told me to come home because there were a bunch of hooligans in front of our house and to shoot em'." We didnt even wait for 10 seconds to get out of there. Never passed there since
The Mic:Who is the bands musical influence?
The Funeral March:We have a lot of musical influence ranging from Botch, Refused, Coalesce and all the way to Radiohead and Counting Crows. We all love a lot of music and dont just limit ourselves to the type of music we write.
The Mic:How did the band get together?
The Funeral March:We were all just friends in school and different Tucson bands. Liam McCarthy, Nick Johnson, Tim Steehler and Robby Burbidge started a band in high school called Forgotten Melody and found Shane Sheffer when the first four band members wanted a musical revelation. Thus starting The Funeral March.
The Mic:What is your musical background like?
The Funeral March:Shane's mother is a choir teacher so he always grew up around singing and piano. Tim started playing drums at full force since the age of nine. He also was in many music classes throughout highschool and college like improv jazz and big band classes. Many of Nicks relatives are all in bands so hes always been around that. Liam started playing guitar when he was about 14. Robby started playing guitar at age 12.
The Mic:Any other members in your family that are
musicians?
The Funeral March:We all have various family members affiliated with music.
The Mic:What is the TOP reason why you want to play
music?
The Funeral March:Its very expressive and amazing to share a bond with people. Meeting new people all the time on the road is a blast and lets you know this world is worth living in because there are good people out there!
The MIC:what's your stance on file swapping?
The Funeral March:As for us we would be honored for you to share our albums!
The MIC: what is the process of making a cd?
The Funeral March:Taking a couple months to write and save up some money to lay it all down into tracks.
The MIC: how do you get the word out about your music?
The Funeral March:We use myspace a lot, but who doesnt? One of the main ways we promote is by touring. This is an awesome way to promote because for people that have never heard you before, seeing you live is the best.
The MIC:how is your local responce to your music?
The Funeral March:We all go to a lot of shows because we have a lot of friends in bands and a lot of friends traveling through Tucson.
The MIC:what is the farthers you have traveled for a gig?
The Funeral March:Um, the farthest we've traveled to get to one show is about 12 hours driving on the summer highway.
The MIC:What tune on the cd are you most proud of?
The Funeral March:"A Friend of Mayhem" for sure its our newest album and we put a lot into it. CHECK IT OUT!
